Madonna went all out for a new photo shoot, transforming herself into the Virgin Mary and recreating the Last Supper.
The 64-year-old announced Tuesday a world tour to celebrate her 40th anniversary in the music industry.
So it was no surprise that the musicians from Material Girl were the first to grace the inaugural issue of Vanity Fair Icons, with Spanish, Italian and French editions of the publication collaborating on the finished product.
She took her chances with both hands and appeared on the cover as the Virgin Mary with a stunning headpiece by Dolce & Gabbana set atop an intricate veil.
In the snap, she was staring up at the camera with tears in her eyes.
Another photo showed the Queen of Pop in a red robe and white dress standing powerfully over a food-covered table surrounded by other women.
Madonna was photographed by photographers Luigi & Iango for this issue, with Olivier Bouchara, head of editorial content at Vanity France, applauding the shoot.
“In this very special issue, Madonna will be Madonna again: an icon,” he said in a press release.
“A figure who not only embodied musical trends and styles of dress, but was as disturbing as she was divine.
“She devoted herself wholeheartedly to the creativity of our photographers, Luigi and Iango, and 30 years after Like a Virgin, she redefined her relationship with religion. Painting over photography. Reinterpretation over representation. .
“Now is a good time for me. Gathering ideas, getting inspired, interacting with creative people, watching movies, looking at art, listening to music.
You can’t go wrong, as Madge is embarking on a celebration tour to mark her incredible career so far.
