As explained by Leslie (symbolically portrayed by Amy Poehler) parks and recreation Back in 2010, February 13th is for girls. So Galentine’s Day is her 24 hours to celebrate the female friendships in your life. There’s nothing wrong with spending February 14th with your partner or participating in her dream Valentine’s Day (if you get the chance, do it!), but the eternity that women’s friendships entail. There is something special about celebrating the love of a . , no matter how you feel about V-Day itself.

So when is Galentine’s Day?
According to Ms Leslie Knope’s edict (which is how I spend most of my life anyway), Galentine’s Day falls on February 13th, the day before Valentine’s Day.
Where did Galentine’s Day come from?
Like Festivus and Slapsgiving before it, the holiday was born on television. Galentine’s Day first entered the mainstream in the 2010 episode. parks and recreation (The proper title is “Galentine’s Day”, in case you were wondering). In this episode, Leslie plans a brunch for all of his closest friends, complete with presents, hearts, declarations of love, and of course, the key to a good celebration, lots of mimosas.
“Each February 13th, a female friend and I leave my husband and boyfriend at home and come home breakfast style,” explains Leslie. “Women celebrating women. Lilith kind of takes the anxiety out of her fair. Plus her frittata.” Sounds like my kind of time!
The holiday started on the small screen, but quickly took on a life of its own, thanks to both the show’s popularity and the originality of the idea. Today, Etsy is flooded with Galentine’s Day merchandise, Hallmark sells a special card, and you can even buy a Galentine’s Day bouquet. Needless to say, this fictional holiday has officially gone mainstream. I am here for that.
How do you celebrate Galentine’s Day?
Ultimately, Galentine’s Day is all about spending time and celebrating with your fellow gals. If your group just likes to drink wine and rewatch classic rom-coms, you have even more power. Here are some.
1. Host a pajama party.
Who said sleepovers have to end in middle school? Absolutely nothing screams BFF like a true girls night out. Have your friends pick out some Valentine-themed pajamas (which can be sexy or sweet, depending on your mood) and feed the crew some drinks and some Chinese food. . 2. Have the tarot cards read to you.
If you get together with a girl, you should become a witch, right? Or at least, that’s what I do.
