Hello Sian, Can you tell us a little bit about your creative journey and fascination with fashion and beauty photography?
I started photographing fashion and beauty when I realized that the most enjoyable part of wedding photography was the individual portraits of people. I love taking close-up shots and outfits of her, and I knew this was where I wanted to direct my attention. So I invested in a studio, fell in love with lighting and started experimenting from there.
How do you come up with ideas?
As mentioned above, every photo shoot begins with a mood board. It is very important to have a clear picture of your vision before you start shooting. Not only does this help you focus, but if you’re working in a team, it helps them understand what your vision is, and brings the whole look and feel together.
What camera kit do you shoot with?
I am currently shooting with a Canon EOS R5. (opens in new tab)I decided to switch to mirrorless, and I honestly have no regrets. This is the best camera I’ve ever owned and it lasts long enough for me. When it comes to lenses, the must-have is the Canon RF 70-200 f2.8. (opens in new tab).
This lens is the most versatile for beauty and fashion, offering a range of different looks.I like Canon’s prime portrait lenses (opens in new tab)but I like having options and have always steered towards a zoom lens.
Ready to shoot?
Shooting days are always exciting. Especially when you have a great concept and you’re working with a team that you know can bring it to life, the air can get very noisy. The best way to relax a model is to have a chat before starting a photo shoot.
Ask questions about them and what are their interests. Then when they’re in front of the camera, you can come back to that information and relax.
How important is post-processing to you, and what aspects do you focus on?
How important is post-processing to you?
If I have a lot of images by the deadline, I work with my retoucher to do some basic skin editing. This will give you a good base from which to make sure the whole image is free of distractions and your eyes will be drawn to the model. I don’t like heavy editing. It also keeps the colors as lively as possible without desaturating or oversaturating them.
